“I told you not to do it!” Issai snarled, so furious that he barely registered the cold.

Hahri sat facing him with a sheepish smile. “It wasn’t that bad. So we saw some interesting lights, and I suddenly felt like we could take on a whole army alone. The important thing is that at no time did I feel like I wasn’t in control of my own mind. Until you pounded my senses with a huge dose of shock, it was a rather exhilarating and peaceful experience.”

“Peaceful?” Issai repeated in disbelief. “Exactly how can being hit by a lightning bolt be described as peaceful? Because that’s exactly what being hit with that wave of power felt like. It was so intense that it was almost painful!”

“I really did expect to just fall asleep,” Hahri insisted. “I just thought it might be good to know whether or not one of us could rest our mind while the other was fully alert while sharing a body. You never know if something like that might come in handy sometime in the future should we find ourselves with one body and in need of a sentry during the night.”

“What was it that you saw exactly?” Korin asked. This time, the ancient monk didn’t even attempt to approach them.

Issai blew out a frustrated breath. “If neither you nor Saiya saw anything unusual, then it’s quite possible that it was just something screwy that happened to Kye’s brain as a result of all that excess energy that was released from the gods-only-know where.”

“Then why don’t I at least have a headache?” Hahri asked. “Hell, I don’t even feel the least bit weak, or dizzy, or even particularly jittery. In fact, I feel so wide awake and energized that I’ll probably have trouble sleeping tonight.” He looked pointedly at Issai. “Do you feel any worse than last time?”

“No,” Issai admitted reluctantly.

Instead of rubbing it in, the other boy just flashed him a gentle smile. “Don’t think that I don’t appreciate how much you worry about me,” he said. “It may not seem like it, but I really am doing these things carefully. That’s why I pulled back immediately when things got so weird.”

“You really don’t think it was a hallucination do you?”

“I don’t, and I’ll tell you why. I meant what I said when I told you I felt peaceful—because for the first time since the forest outside of Daisha, the pain of being so near to you almost disappeared.”

Issai’s eyes widened even as Saiya let out an involuntary gasp of surprise. “You’re kidding!”

Issai hadn’t noticed any difference in his own proximity pain, but then again, it was already so faint when he had control of Hahri’s body that it was possible he wouldn’t have noticed any differences unless he was paying particular attention to it.

“That’s why I think we should do it again,” the other boy insisted. “I believe that whatever it was that happened definitely had something to do with the Bond. At the very least I would like to see if it was just a one-time fluke or something that’s supposed to happen.
